This Tennessee summer heat is almost more than we can bear, but at least there's lots going around in town to keep us busy and happy! From fireworks and 5k's to music and theatre, July will be a month to remember. Here are the events we hope to see you at!

Enjoy: An INDEPENDENCE DAY TRADITION
Firefighter's Freedom Festival

Date: Wednesday, July 4
Time: 3:00 P.M. - 10:00 P.M.
Location: McKellar-Sipes Regional Airport (308 Grady Montgomery Drive)
Cost: FREE!

If you've never been to the 4th of July Firefighter's Freedom Festival, you sure are missing out! Food, activities, fireworks—all the things you're looking for if you're staying in town for the holiday. Plus, the airport makes for a perfect spacious venue with plenty of free parking.

Endorse: The Jackson Theatre Guild
MY Fair Lady

Date: Thursday, July 12 - Sunday, July 15
Time: Thursday/Friday/Saturday - 7:30 P.M. - 9:30 P.M.; Saturday/Sunday - 2:00 P.M. - 4:00 P.M.
Location: The Ned (314 East Main Street)
Cost: $16 ($14 for students and seniors; $10 for Saturday matinee)

If you haven't seen enough classics this summer between Ned Flicks and Reels at the AMP, join the Jackson Theatre Guild for a beloved musical: My Fair Lady. 731Day Porchfest performer Alyssa Marshall will be playing the famous Audrey Hepburn character, and the songs and set designs are bound to be outstanding as ever.

Toast of Jackson

Location: Jackson Fairgrounds (600 South Highland Avenue)
Cost: $20 (group discounts available)

Wine connoisseurs, we've got the perfect event for you. Not only will there be dozens of local reds, whites, and rosés for you to sample; grill masters will be cooking up some yummy treats, and West Tennessee artisans will be selling handmade items to pair with your artful evening. Plus, you can feel good knowing that your ticket cost goes to the Exchange Club of Jackson to bring an end to child abuse.

Exercise: Your Legs for a Good Cause
Annual Autism Awareness Freedom 5k & Family Fun

Date: Tuesday, July 3
Time: 6:30 P.M. - 9:00 P.M.
Location: West Tennessee Hearing & Speech Center (65 Ridgecrest Road)
Cost: $25 ($20 group rate for five or more)

Autism affects so many families throughout the world, and we're getting together to raise awareness as well as funds for West Tennessee Hearing & Speech Center's speech therapy programs. With a "freedom" theme for this year, runners are encouraged to participate as individuals or teams, but there will be plenty of fun for non-runners as well.

Now in our third year of celebration, we absolutely cannot wait for 731Day! Not only will there be dozens of local deals throughout town; we'll also be offering three unique events: an #OJHshop Pop-Up, our annual water balloon fight, and Porchfest—a brand-new event! Here's a quick preview: ten local musicians, cozy front porches, food trucks. . . . Long story short, it's gonna be dreamy. We can't wait!


Originally from Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Katie Howerton moved to Jackson in 2011 to study Graphic Design and Drawing at Union University. She discovered Our Jackson Home in January 2015 and used it as a guinea pig for her senior design project, creating the first issue of Our Jackson Home: The Magazine. After graduating she was given leadership over Our Jackson Home at theCO, where she now runs the blog, designs the magazine, and coordinates events. She and her husband Jordan live in Midtown and are active members of City Fellowship Baptist Church.
