I’ve always joked that I’m a “child of the day,” a Biblical reference that held extra meaning after dozens of late nights in the art studio during my college days. Those evenings took a tole on my mind, body, and soul, and while I never plan to re-enter into the habit of late-night working, I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything in the world.
Mornings, while often dreaded, are undeniably refreshing. Anybody who has worked an opening shift at a coffee shop can attest to both the personal battle of waking oneself up in still-dark hours and the quiet reverence an empty space has as the sun creeps slowly through the windows. While often sped through in an attempt to get things rolling, these special hours can provide fresh perspectives and a renewed spirit.
Similarly, nights are somewhat of an overlooked jewel, often receiving the least amount of our attention and energy but providing space away from our work to try new things, build community, and simply be still. There is mystery in the darkness but also fear, and sometimes I wonder just what I’m missing out on—conversations, beauty, new ideas—every time I turn off my lights a little early and decline an invitation to a late-night Waffle House visit. . . . .
