The concept of “hustle” has been a booming one lately, articles crowding my Facebook feed discussing hard work, entrepreneurship, and self-sacrifice. While I was eager to adopt my friend’s hashtag “#hustle2015” a few years ago when I was giving everything I had to finishing school, planning a wedding, and starting my first job, there wasn’t much hustle left in me by 2016, and two years later, I’m still waiting for something to light the fire in me to do something great.

But what about grit? What is it exactly? This word has haunted me over the last few months, and while it’s been tempting to tune it out with the rest of everyone else’s hustle manifestos, something tells me grit is different.

From what I can see, grit is determination, seeing things through from start to finish—whether that thing is starting a business or simply loving your family. Grit is believing that getting your hands dirty is a good thing and that you’ll be a more whole person for what your scarring experiences teach you. Grit is surrendering perfectionism and embracing the beauty of a house well lived in. Grit is all the hard work of hustle without the expectation of victory or recognition, and that’s what makes it so special. . . . Read more in the journal.
